It was replaced with a gun battery.Īfter the government forcibly removed local Aboriginal people who camped there, Bennelong Point became a busy wharf and landing area and eventually a tram depot. Out of the 233 entries submitted in the 1955 worldwide competition, Jørn Utzon’s design was declared the winner. The roof of the Sydney Opera house is panels made from solid precast. Sydney Opera House ©To begin with, the first controversy showed up at the design selection phase itself. Just as in its design, environmentally, Sydney Opera House set new standards. In 1966 a report made by the acoustic advisor Lothar Cremer revealed that the design of the main hall only allowed 2000 seats. However, it had to make many changes to the original design. This is because the original design of the Sydney Opera House kept changing. The Sydney Opera House is without doubt the most representative man-made monument of Australia and the most recognizable symbol of Sydney. Two years later, after Bennelong left Sydney for Britain with Phillip, the settlers demolished his house, which had become a gathering place for Aboriginal people. The construction exceeded what was estimated and to make it worse the project was already late. Bennelong had been helping the colonists learn Eora customs and language and Phillip readily complied with his request. In 1790, Bennelong, of the Wangal group of the Eora people, asked Governor Arthur Phillip to build him a brick house at the far end of Limeburner’s Point. AD Classics: Sydney Opera House / Jrn Utzon + 17 Text description provided by the architects. The story of the Opera House is a drama that for more than 15 years grabbed national headlines. Since its opening in 1973 it has become a symbol the world immediately associates with Sydney and Australia. It broke new ground for design and engineering around the world. The first colonists called the peninsula Cattle Point, and then Limeburner’s Point, because they burnt the oyster shells discarded there by the Gadigal to make lime for much-needed building mortar. The building was eventually completed by others in 1973. The Sydney Opera House is one of the 20th century’s most iconic buildings. Gadigal people know what is now called Bennelong Point as Jubgalee or Tubowgule, meaning white mud or clay. The peninsula was an important site for the local Gadigal group of the Eora people who regularly visited to fish and gather oysters. When the first British colonists arrived at Sydney Cove in January 1788, they unloaded their livestock and supplies onto what is now known as Bennelong Point.
